Scholastic Reading Counts Program

At Newton we value reading and encouraging students to become lifetime lovers of reading. The Scholastic Reading Counts Program is an individual reading program that is offered at Newton and some other area schools. This program allows students to choose a book in their interest area and reading lexile level from an extensive list of titles. Then, after reading the book, he/she can take a computerized test to show comprehension ofthe book read. Students set reading goals with their Language Arts teacher based on number of books they would like to read or number of points. Points are pre-assigned to each book, based on length and difficulty.Reaching reading goals represent 15% of student’s language arts grades, so it is important to meet these goals for the quarter!
